The City Room filled with students on Thursday, Jan. 20 for the State of The Student Body, an address that has not been made for a couple of years. Student Body President Brent Buterbaugh celebrated the accomplishments of the 2021 school year, announced upcoming events and forward-looking plans.

Successes on campus over the past semester include the approval of three new student organizations including The Bridge, The Mend and The Entrepreneurship Club as well as the revitalization of in-person Inviso weeks and New Student Orientation. Other campus events such as the Red and Green Affair with the House of Thatcher and Lewis were able to proceed after last year’s abrupt halt due to COVID-19 setbacks. Off campus, the Great Race returned, the houses of SBA and Reagan hosted House retreats and sports teams surpassed expectations..

One of the most popular traditions at King’s, Fall Retreat, proceeded this year at Camp Tecumseh. The long awaited event was reinstated after it was cut out of the budget from the previous school year. To compensate for the budget and COVID-19 restrictions the Cabinet worked hard by providing a new location and format to the retreat.

Buterbaugh awarded four people who have made this year a success. Kyrie Hall was given the award for Value of Unity, Edwin Perez was given the award for Value of Servanthood, Alexa Howard was given the award for Value of Transparency and Jackson Holliday was given the award for Value of Humility. Buterbaugh created the Presidential Award specifically to celebrate the accomplishments of individuals within the community. He further took time to voice his gratitude for Cabinet Social Media Associate Brianna Jacobs, individuals serving on the Events Committee and the Council members.

Looking forward, Student Body President applications will be sent in a schoolwide email on Jan. 28. The candidates will be announced in early February and campaigns will last for two weeks. Jokingly, Buterbaugh admitted that as much as it is a time to interact with the candidates, it is also a time of multiple events with free food to incentivize students.

Ending with the phrase, “Who Are We and Who Are We Becoming,” Buterbaugh’s final statements emphasized the impact that every student will leave after they graduate from King’s.
