Mattie Winburn has been announced as next year’s Student Body President. The election results were announced on Wednesday, Feb. 23, by the current SBP Brent Buterbaugh.

Buterbaugh began the event by announcing that there would be no run-off election. Overall, 80% of the student body participated in voting, while only 73% voted last year.

“I just want to thank you guys so much for showing up and showing out,” Winburn said. “I’m very excited about this upcoming year; I’m very excited about the cabinet and about everything that we’re going to accomplish this year.”

Opposing candidates Abby Roth and Max Pleban showed their support and excitement for Winburn after the announcement.

“I am so excited for Mattie,” Roth said. “I know you're [Winburn] going to do great things.”

“I feel super confident with what Mattie is going to do this year,” Pleban said. “She’s a great leader.”

According to her platform, Winburn hopes to bridge the gap between the student body and the King’s administration by advocating and advancing the thoughts and ideas of the student body.

“I’m really excited to work with her for the next two months with the transition from my team to her team,” Buterbaugh said. “I’m excited to be part of that process and then to watch her go on and do great things.”

“All three candidates were phenomenal,” Moses Kazanjian, Director of Spiritual Life, said. “Any Student Body President can make things happen, but to make things happen at a level that really touches the students, that’s what I’m excited about.”

Winburn will officially step into her role for the 2022-2023 academic year and will use the coming weeks to choose her Cabinet members.

Over 90% of voters passed three amendments to the Council’s constitution along with the SBP votes. These include the option for Cabinet members to appoint an associate, future voting tactics in case in-person voting is effected and a rewording of article nine section four to clarify the amendment process.
